Base Camp at Sam Tso Taring
Base Camp, on the shore of the Sam Tso Taring (lake) is a place of staggering beauty and smelling of yak dung, mud and big mountain air. The area, a flat zone downhill from a yak herder’s farm, teems with inquisitive Tibetan children, dogs and periodic invasions of yaks, goats and sheep. The views are priceless – serene lake, glaciers and a southern skyline dominated by the massive snow clotted bulk of Sepu Kangri.

"Friday the 13th - listening to Cat Stevens in the morning. I feel like I am young and at Huxley College again with the whole world spread out before me. I was dreaming about the Himalayas- a life full of exploration in the most hidden corners of the world. All of us felt this excitement whether it was saving the planet from environmental destruction or working for world peace.

I feel myself right there again - a life of climbing mountains and photographing places - recognizing a freedom I never thought possible. And here I am in Tibet after 30 years of climbing - 27 years after those Huxley days. I have lived a dream life."
