The Road Less Traveled Nakchu Previous Next

Nakchu
Nakchu is the size of a mid-range American town with a floating population of up to 100,000 unregistered migrants. The bustling commercial hub is full of restaurants, shops, karaoke bars, brothels disguised as barbershops and the ever-present streetside pool tables. Impressions - cold, windy, noxious diesel fumes, brash concrete buildings and goats eating burning garbage.

"Woke up anxious as my heart pounded from lack of oxygen. I knew we needed more food of the type we’d eat a lot of - especially honey and jam. In my old partner Pasha’s words - "Clever people will always find compromise. Mark is a distant person - closed - having Carina around only makes him more distant. I want very much to get closer. It’s a pity that we haven’t climbed together more..."

"Nakchu, 4500m (14,400 feet) over sea level. I can’t decide whether it’s the altitude or the bad air that’s getting to me. My head feels like coffee with-drawl. They are burning garbage all over, the air is thick and the stench is unbearable. How can people live in an environment as depressing as this?"
